The University of the West Indies (UWI) traces its origins to Mona, Jamaica, where it began as an overseas medical college of the University of London in 1948. Initially serving thirty-three medical students, UWI expanded rapidly to meet the needs of the English-speaking Caribbean. By 1963, it had evolved into a regional institution with campuses in Jamaica, Trinidad, and Barbados authorized to confer its degrees.

Over the past seventy years, UWI’s Faculty of Medical Sciences has experienced significant growth and development. Clinical teaching expanded to Trinidad and Barbados in 1967 through the Eastern Caribbean Medical Scheme. Subsequently, a complete medical school was established in Trinidad in 1989, followed by the extension of clinical teaching to Nassau, Bahamas, in 1997. In 2008, the Barbados clinical program expanded into a complete 5-year program. The faculty’s diverse undergraduate programs include Medicine, Basic Medical Sciences, Nursing, Dentistry, Physical Therapy, Diagnostic Imaging, and Pharmacy, with nearly 5,000 students enrolled.

Additionally, UWI offers over 1,000 students various postgraduate programs, including DM Professional Degree programs specializing in medical specialities and taught master’s programs like the Master of Public Health and the MSc in Forensic Science. Furthermore, the university accommodates 83 students pursuing PhD/MPhil research degrees, highlighting its commitment to advanced medical education and research.
